Southeast softball playoffs

Well the good fight was fought as Southeast Blue made its first trip ever to the playoffs, but the final score didn’t really reflect that as we lost 21-2 in our worst offensive game of the season.

We had to go at it with only eight players last night as the four teammates that are currently away at college couldn’t make it back for the game – so we’ll just blame it on that.

Special thanks to everyone who came out to watch us this year, and especially to our Team Mom, Kim Taylor, who, without fail, always had the snacks ready after the games.

We plan to play again soon, but probably not at Big League Dreams. All of us are looking for a cheaper place and a place where the fans don’t have to pay to watch, so as soon as we know something, we will share it with the class.

An unbelievable win for Southeast softball

Normally, when a team is down 13-0 before even coming up to bat, you don’t give that team a very good shot to win the game. But you can throw the rules out the window when you are playing Southeast Blue!

After being down 13-0 in the first inning and 16-3, your favorite softball team stormed back to win their last game before the playoffs by a score of 19-18, finishing the regular season with only one loss.

Following a rough first inning where runs and errors where plentiful, things settled down and our oppenets only managed 3, 2, 0, and 0 runs the last four innings. A number of strange plays also helped the cause including two homeruns that were called outs because the guy had already hit one, a couple of outs from balls bring driven back up the middle, and one tag out of a guy who put one foot over the line to make the turn to second, but didn’t commit.

Next Monday night are the playoffs (assuming there are no Ike rainouts), and our team is going to need some help. We will be down five guys if the college guys don’t come back, so get on the phone or email and convince them (and their parents) we need them. You can’t make a playoff run with only seven people.

On the same note, if you know anyone who looks like me, Joel, Trent, Ryan Taylor or Josh Burke or know someone who can make fake IDs, talk to the coach, Jeremy Gibson. It’s true – we will do anything to win.

See you at the playoffs next week!

Another Softball Victory

As playoffs get closer and closer, the Southeast Blue softball squad keeps getting better and better. Last night’s victory was by a score of 16-3 – thanks in part to more stellar pitching, defense and timely hitting.

Tim Miller and Jeremy Green hit back to back homers in a strong, 6-run inning, including the very rare homerun-that-doesn’t-even-make-it-to-the-pitcher’s-mound shot by Miller.

There is one more regular season game next week, a makeup game from when Eduardo “destroyed” our area a few weeks ago, and then playoffs on Sept. 15. Southeast is in first place so far with a 7-1 record.

Hope to see everyone out next week!

Latest softball victory

The Southeast softballers had their easiest win of the season last night as the other team had to forfeit due to lack of players. Instead, the team was able to get in some much-needed practice and scrimmage another team willing to stay and play.

In that game, Southeast won 14-4 on the back of more good defense and great pitching from Jeremy “Charlie Hough” Gibson, who came out of retirement to lead the team to victory. New teammates Jeremy Green, Robert Gayhart and Andy Johnston (taking the place of the college guys) all contributed with hits and RBI.

Two more games are left before the playoffs, so we hope to see as many fans as possible over the next month. We do have a game Labor Day, and the time will be posted here shortly.

A word of advice, however, if you plan to come to the games. Bring some OFF bug spray. You are gonna need it.

Southeast Softball rules – games #5-6

It was a warm, muggy night, but still a great day to play two as Southeast had a double-header yesterday. The good guys came away with a sweep, winning the first game by a score of 17-9 and the second at 12-4. Both games were ultimately decided by one large offensive inning in each, but the real MVP of the two games was the Southeast defense. There were very few mental lapses or errors, which led to overall good play.

Combine that with Joel’s magnificent pitching (although he has trouble staying on his feet when balls are hit slowly to him), and the record now stands at 4-2. With three games to go before playoffs, we certainly will miss Joel, Trent, Ryan and Josh – all headed off to school in the next few days. Good luck to all of them this year.

So, we will be looking for some ringers the next few weeks – let us know if you are interested. Next week’s game is at 9:00. See you there!

Softball Game #4 Recap

Another tough game for SE Blue, as we lost 11-10 in seven innings. We had the lead, 10-9, going into the bottom of the last inning thanks to some clutch hitting, but couldn’t hold it as they scored two to win the game on a walk-off single.

Hitter of the game goes to “Married” Jason Kirksey who gave the good guys the 10-9 lead in the seventh with a clutch, two-out, two-run triple.

Next week, the game is at 6:00 PM, so come on out and enjoy some sun and softball. And don’t forget about the double-header on August 18 (6:00 and 8:00).

Softball game #3

No let-downs for the old home team last night, as mighty Southeast Blue won 19-9, scoring their most runs all season. The game was highlighted by a running, stumbling over-the-shoulder basket catch by an unnamed ringer playing for the night and a stretch over the left field foul fence for an out by Trent McWherter.

As mentioned previously, no more 10:00 games are scheduled this season, so we hope to have some more fans out at the games this summer. There are plenty of 6, 7 and 8 o’clock games left, including a double-header on August 18.

And congratulations to Eric Ramirez for only striking out once. It looked like it might be two or three a couple of times.

Monday Softball

We have a game time for this coming Monday. Anyone want to take a guess?…. You got it 10:00, as usual. I told the lady who called that it was our third late game in a row and she said she would leave a note for the scheduler. Who knows if that will do any good. If we have too many more we might have to start looking for somewhere else to play.

Softball Game #2

Tough game this past week, as the good guys blew a lead and lost 16-13. We can blame it all on substitute pitcher Brent Hankins. Seriously, though – thanks to Brent for filling in for some players who could not be there.

Offensive player of the game award goes to Jeremy Gibson who reached base all four times from the leadoff position (obviously his natural spot).

The Carl Jung award for letting something mental affect his game goes to Joel Ramirez, who was so worried about making good throws in his first game back at shortstop, that he let three ground balls go through his legs.

Stay tuned this Sunday morning for the time for this Monday’s game. Hopefully it won’t be another 10:00.
