Wims collection this Sunday morning

Remember for this Sunday morning, that I will have the envelope one more time to donate to the Wims Family Foundation if you were not able to last Sunday morning or at Life Group.

We got a very good amount last week and I want to commend everyone for their generosity to this great family. After class on Sunday, I will give what we have collected to one of the ministers to pass on to the family.

Thanks everyone,

Class summary and continuing conversation

In case you were not able to be in class on Sunday, here is a quick summary of what we talked about, so hopefully we can keep the comments coming from where we left off on Sunday morning:

We have been studying this idea of the everyday God, meaning how do each of us see God in the things we do everyday, whether it’s work, hobbies, school, etc. – God shows himself in numerous ways, and we have been using difference teachers in class to voice how God shows himself to them through the things they are passionate about.

I have some tentative agreements from a few people including Mike Kirksey and Scott Allen that if we continue on this study, they would join us for some guest teaching. We would also need to secure more teachers as well.

The curriculum that the rest of the church is starting was something developed specifically for us by Dr. Fred Aquino at ACU titled The Humanity of Jesus or this idea of living a New Humanity.

How I introduced it on Sunday was that the idea of our humanity is so different and opposite than what the worldly humanist philosophy is. Our lives don’t reflect a give-and-take attitude like the world is used to, but rather a sense of giving because that’s what Jesus would have done, and not caring about the reward or what we will receive.

So I will open it back up to conversation and comments about which way to go next. Some of the prevailing thought on Sunday was that we should do both, just which one first. There was a slight majority in taking to people that we should do the Humanity series now because we have always talked about being more in line with what the rest of the church does.

So what do you prefer and why do you prefer it? Does one make more sense for us now over the other? What if there were opportunities to join in with other classes from time to time on this study? Would that be beneficial?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Combined class this Sunday

Well, we were wondering what we were going to do with Jeremy being out of town and no other teacher lined up. But, in the words of Ray Romano, sometimes “material presents itself.”

This Sunday morning, Southeast is asking for all classes to be combined in room 304 during their normal time for a presentation from a representative from the Listening Lab.

(mandatory promotional material coming…)

The listening lab is a nationally resptected program that not only will help us with our relationship skills, but also allows us to reach those who may have wondered away from their faith.

For more information or to register online for the Nov. 4-8 trainings, go to www.secoc.org and click on the event registration tab. Sign up sheets will also be available in the Welcome Center.

So go to room 304 this Sunday morning for combined class and Jeremy will pick back up next Sunday, November 9.

Church canceled on Sunday

In case you haven’t heard already, church, classes and life groups are all canceled on Sunday, Sept. 14, because of the 77546 evacuation.

I will echo what Jared said – please be safe and take care of yourselves. After this is over, if anyone has a need for anything and you have access to a computer, please leave a comment here and we will do all we can to help.

Notes from the week

Softball – as you all know, the game was canceled this past Monday night. Not because of the weather, but apparently none of the other teams wanted to face us, and they all ran out of town scared. Not sure yet how this will affect future games, but we will pass the information on Sunday and via this intercyberwebsite.

Sr. Minister search – As was announced last Sunday, Jason Broussard is heading up the search committee for a new Sr. Minister at Southeast. I know we all certainly are praying for him and this process, and he has said he is always open to talk or to ideas that any of us may have. Any questions you have about this can be directed to him or to Dave Gibson, Lanny Partain or Bob Gardner. And don’t forget about the website (www.southeastminister.com). If you ever think anyone may be interested in the job or hear of a candidate, pass it on to them. You will be amazed where can run into people these days…

Fantasy Football – If you are interested in playing, I believe there are between four and six spots left. Talk to Tim Miller soon if you want in. The draft is Sunday night, August 17 at Jason and Cristen’s house.

Sunday morning class – This week will be our last interview before Jared spends a couple of weeks wrapping things up for us. August 31 is a combined service for all families, so there will be no class that day. Again, be thinking about what you would like class to look like next. There has been a rumbling of interest in a podcast, so we may pursue that, but details are still not finalized.

Communion leaders meeting – Don’t forget about this meeting August 24 at church if you would like to take part in this ministry opportunity

Good Sunday redux

I also want to echo the sentiments about this past Sunday morning with Rick and Jared’s presentation – very good stuff.

Keep in mind the request that we have talked about in class for a few weeks now concerning the end of this current lesson series on Spiritual Journey. After August/Labor Day, we will want to move onto something else, and we would love it to be a recommendation from the class. Some possibilities are:

Study a book vis a vis what we used to do in Life Groups
All discuss a podcast that we assign for the week
Try to st up a theme with rotating teachers from throughout the class and Southeast
Dive into a block of scripture and dissect that
…or any others you can think of

Coming up in the next few weeks for interviews will be David Gibson, Eric and Heather Ramirez, and a few others. See you in class at 10:30 on Sundays!

Good Sunday

Thanks to Rick for presenting Sunday. He did very well and I think we all learned something from his and Jared’s talk. As we wrap up this portion of our class I believe that we all know each other better and know God a little better.
